How much does an answering service cost for a plumbing business?

A straight look at what it costs to have your plumbing calls answered — human services, AI, and DIY — and how to work out what it's worth versus what you're losing to voicemail.

If you’re a plumber tired of losing after-hours jobs to voicemail, the obvious question is: what does it cost to have someone — or something — answer the phone for you? Here’s the honest range, and how to tell whether it’s worth it.

The three ways to get your plumbing calls answered

1. A human answering service. A call centre answers in your business name and takes messages. Typically billed per call or per minute — often A$1–2+ per call or a monthly plan of a few hundred dollars. The catch: it gets pricier the busier you are, after-hours costs a premium, and they don’t know plumbing.

2. An AI receptionist. A system answers every call 24/7, talks the caller through the basics (including an emergency shut-off), qualifies the job, and books it into your diary. Usually a flat monthly fee in the low-to-mid hundreds plus a setup fee — and it doesn’t cost more at 2am or during a burst-pipe rush. (How AI compares to a human receptionist.)

3. DIY. Divert to your mobile (misses the after-hours and on-the-tools calls) or missed-call text-back (cheap, and the single best free fix — guide here).

The number that actually matters

The cost only makes sense next to what you’re losing. A plumbing business missing even a couple of jobs a week to unanswered calls is often bleeding thousands a month — far more than any answering setup costs. (Here’s the maths.)

So the real question isn’t “what does answering cost?” — it’s “what is not answering costing me, and does the fix pay for itself several times over?” For most plumbers, it does, easily.

What to look for in a plumbing answering setup

  • 24/7, including after-hours — that’s where the emergency jobs are.
  • Handles a surge — a storm or a cold snap means many calls at once.
  • Knows plumbing — can triage an emergency, walk a caller through the shut-off, and book by urgency.
  • Books into your system — ServiceM8, Tradify, Jobber or your calendar.
  • Flat, predictable pricing — no bill-shock when you get busy.

That last point is why a lot of plumbers land on an AI receptionist over a per-call human service — the busiest, most profitable weeks are exactly when a per-call bill hurts most.
